What to Write

All the information in these pages is free for your use but it does get a little stressful. A cup of coffee now and then would be helpful. If you found the information useful feel free to buy me a cup. |
What you write about is, of course, entirely up to you. It is not so much what you write as it is how you write it. When you choose a topic to write about make it something you enjoy doing or talking about. Something from your past or something you read about a lot and know something about. When I tell someone to start writing content for their website I hear the same comment over and over. They send emails telling me they can't write. They tell me they don't know to write content. But you know what, some of the emails they send go into detail as to why they cannot write and the email itself is actually content. In a lot of cases the email could be used as content for a website. People don't realize what they have to tell someone else could be enough information to make a web page. They have revealed exactly why someone thinks writing is not for them. That is often enough to let someone else understand the writing procedure.
What I'm saying is that if you think you can't write you are wrong. I once had a friend who was a published author. I mentioned to him that I wished I was more like him. I always wanted to write a book but I knew that I didn't know how. He just laughed at me and said, you'll never be able to write that book if you don't try. He was right. It made me think. I always told my kids the only thing you cannot do is the thing you choose not to try. I told my kids that and then I chose not to try. (that was kind of dumb on my part. Do as I say, not as I do.) Right then I decided to give it a go. I sat down at the computer in my office and started typing words. I had no idea what I was writing but words were appearing on the paper. I read what was on the paper and thought, WOW, I'm writing. That was my start. I continued typing and before I knew it I had typed more than 100 pages. I had actually written a book.
That book was pure slapstick humor about a detective
with a water So, I thought I could never write but there came a book. As I said, it was pure slap stick humor but a lot of people enjoyed reading it. I wrote about this so you would know that anyone can write but they have to start first. When you write, write like you were talking to a good friend. Write like you were just hanging out and talking over a cup of coffee or a cold beer. You need to have the reader become a friend. A friend who likes chatting with you. Always treat the reader as a friend. When you are writing a web page don't try to make yourself look like something you are not. Don't try to dazzle them with bullsh... that you are not sure of. They will see right through you. There is a place for proper sentences and proper grammar but it doesn't have to be on a webpage. If you come off like a collage scholar using $10 words the reader will soon have enough and leave. You don't want that. All the pages I have written in this website are written with a little redneck humor thrown in now and then. I am redneck from a small town and that is how I try to write. It seems to work well for me. Give it a try. You never know, you may soon be writing a best seller. Ok, go for it and give it your all.
(by the way, if you would like to read the crap I wrote in my first book just send me an email and I'll send you a copy. Just remember, it is just humor and it is not perfect.)
