There is one ingredient for online success that just cannot be ignored. That one ingredient is EXPOSURE. Without exposure you are going nowhere. Exposure is the key to success in any venture you attempt. It is through exposure that the world knows who you are and how to find you. The more exposure you have the better your chance of success. If you have a regular brick and mortar store you concern yourself with location. Remember the old adage of Location, Location, Location. Well, for the brick and mortar store location is the most important thing because location leads to exposure. Your store should be located in a high traffic area. Perhaps in the middle of a large shopping Mall or on a busy corner in town. Some place where people are going by everyday and all day long.
The online business has no body and therefore cannot be located in the mall or next door to an established business. But it is very possible to be linked to a successful online shopping mall or another website. For your online business you want to link yourself to as many established web businesses as you can. The more you link, the more exposure you create. When you link to another website be sure it is a site that can compliment yours. If your site is an information site about building guitars it would be a disadvantage to try to link to a site about cosmetics. If you are doing a guitar site then you may want to link to a site that sells instruments or sheet music. Maybe a site about songs and singers or song writers. Link to something similar to your site. You don't just link to them, you need to contact them and ask for a link exchange. A link exchange is beneficial to both parties. They gain exposure by linking to you and you gain exposure by linking to them. It is a win-win situation. Most websites are pleased to link exchange with sites similar to their own. Some, however, have no links to anyone and don't want to link with anyone. You can also gain exposure by joining some forums and using your web address in your profile. Join as many forums as you can and participate in conversations. Your web address will be passed around and you will have more exposure. Place your address everywhere you can think of. Use it in your email signature. Remember, without exposure the chance of success is very low. Exposure, Exposure, Exposure.
