Before you can do anything in the way of a website you will need to get a domain name. A domain name is your own personal address to your part of cyber space. It is a way for your viewers to find you.

When you choose your domain name think about who you are working for. You want to reach the vast majority of the people, not just your close friends. In other words, choose a name that the crowd will look for.

Your friends will look for your site if your domain name is "www.JohnsExcitingPage.com". But you only have a limited number of friends who know John and most of those are probably not interested in what you have to offer.

Choose a name that contains words that pertain to the product you offer. If you offer Widgets then use something like "www.WidgetsLargeandSmall.com" or maybe "www.WorldWidgetSelection.com". (these address do not work, they are only for example)

Long names are acceptable, however, if it is over 3 or 4 words it can become quite confusing. In which case you could use the dash (-) between words. Example: www.world-widget-selection.com. You can also use a capital letter at the beginning of each word but do not include spaces. It would look like this: www.WorldWidgetSelection.com which makes each word stand out.

Once you decide on a specific domain name you will need to find out if it is already in use by some one else or if it is available. Most of the web hosting companies can help you in finding an unused domain name.

In their site simply enter the name you have chosen and click on search. In seconds they will search the database and let you know if that name is available. If it is you can choose to use it or choose another from a list provided.

If you choose to use the name you can purchase it right there for approximately $16 for one year. It will need to be renewed each year you plan to use it.

Now that you have a domain name you still need someone to host your new site. You can purchase the host from the same place or you can find another site to host your pages.

There are many hosts and they vary in costs. Sign up for a host and start uploading your pages to the web. Publish your site.
