Domain Names are not only an important part of building a web site, they are the FIRST part. Before you ever start your site you should think about a Domain Name.

Your site should actually be built around your domain name. You already have a pretty good idea of what you want your site to be about or you wouldn't be thinking about a site at all.

Your domain name is kind of like the title of the best seller novel you just wrote. You need a title that will attract the attention of the reader. You wouldn't write a book about the Sea and then title it "The life of a Cowboy".

Your title would be something about the sea and one that would give the reader a reason to open the cover and read. Your domain name should do the same thing, it should make the reader want to know what is inside.

So, knowing what you want to say in your site should give you an idea of what the domain name should be. After you decide on a name you need to do a search to find out if it is available.

While you are choosing your name think about who's attention you are trying to attract. By that I mean are you after friends or the masses. If your domain name contains your own name you may only attract those who personally know you.

For example, if your domain name is "BigJohnsBigWebsite.com" how many people do you think will be looking for anything by Big John? Only those who know you personally and the few you can actually notify of the site address. Do you understand why not to use your own name?

If your site is about the Sea, as we mentioned earlier, then the site name should reflect something to do with the sea. The name might be something like "OceansAndSeasOfTheWorld.com" or maybe "AnimalsOfTheSea.com".

Either of these tells the surfer that the site about the sea and/or the sea life. Not about Big John. You can use as long a name as it takes to describe the site as long as it is not over 67 letters and numbers. However, the longer the name, the harder for the surfer to remember.

You can also use the dash in a name but people often overlook the dash and then don't arrive at the right site. Another thing that will be of help to the surfer is the use of a Capital letter at the beginning of each word.
